Time for another Weekend Writing Warriors snippet. Every Sunday, I join a bunch of writers through a blog hop and post an 8-10 sentence snippet of my current project. You can click on the link to see what everyone else is up to.
Oh man. NaNoWriMo brings me to one of my favorite parts of the novel—meeting Wren, Bear, Fox, and Ape. These are Yildirim soldiers working on a large ship under Reuben’s command, but only half-heartedly. In a time where Ilsi feels alone and misused, these characters give her something to smile about. Guaranteed some of my favorite characters to write about—besides Reshma!
“Quick, Wren,” Bear said, nudging him, “say something to get her to like us.”
“What, you don’t think you’re charming enough on your own?” Wren rolled his eyes. He reverted his attention to Ilsi and said, “This may sound weird coming from us, but being friends with the crew is probably your best move.”
“Best move for what?” Ilsi said. It was then she noticed that not a single crew member was wearing a red amulet. She wasn’t forced to wear one, either.
“I assume you’re not staring at my chest because it’s hairy,” Wren said, as if reading her mind; Ilsi blushed in reply. “There’s no need for mind control on this ship—we’re the defects.”
“Wait,” Ilsi said, putting her spoon down, “you’re rebels?”

Interesting choice of names. I already have opinions of the characters. Wren is a birdbrain, Fox is clever, Bear is big and strong and Ape has long limbs.
Ape also may or may not have a big forehead and lots of red hair… 😉
The writing is so smooth and I love these characters already. Excellent excerpt, need more…
Thank you! I appreciate that you read these snippets every week. 🙂
I can see why these characters are fun to write, because they’re fun to read as well. It’s always nice to have a humorous interlude when things are otherwise deadly serious.
Thanks for your insight. One of the main things I had to change was fixing the weird sexist vibe I had in the novel: all the nice characters happen to be women and all the mean ones were men. I’ve been genderbending, cutting out characters, or just flipping sides so there’s a healthy mixture of good and bad. These guys were the product of that mass change. 🙂
I love Wren and Bear already! Great snippet!
The do sound fun and friendly.
Haha, I loved the interaction between the characters, more so between Bear and Wren. Great snippet!
I appreciate you, thanks!
Good scene. Shows down-to-earth vulnerability. I like it!
