Time for another Weekend Writing Warriors snippet. Every Sunday, I join a bunch of writers through a blog hop and post an 8-10 sentence snippet of my current project. You can click on the link to see what everyone else is up to.
While King Seth and Althod are having a bit of a DTR (define the relationship), Gilly is on official business. Here’s a bit of explanation so you can make sense of this week’s snippet. I’ve introduced much earlier in the novel (not really through snippets I don’t think) that Animen are people who can shapeshift into animals. Some can do it when they chose (Gilly is one, and she takes on a hawk form) and others based on the phases of the moon. Many people who are Animen didn’t chose the lifestyle nor their animal counterpart, but comes as an indirect result of taking passage through Beast Forest at some point or another—also by torture/enslavement under the Yildirim. Sounds fun enough, right?
“Gilly!” a voice called, “it’s been ages!” Gilly turned and cocked her head, and saw a light gray squirrel scampering up the tree’s trunk and gave the hawk a twinkling wink.
“What brings you here, then?” the Animan squirrel squeaked.
“I need help raiding a castle,” Gilly answered.
“You need a squirrel like me to help raid a castle?”
“I need Animen and skilled fighters to attack the king’s castle by the Pearl Mountains,” Gilly answered. “The Yildirims have something that I need to steal back.”
“I’m sure any Animen will want to help,” the squirrel responded, twitching his nose. “Revenge on the people who brought this upon us would be well worth the trip.”
“I think it’s time we use the curse given us against those who dealt it to us.”
Ah yes, the scent of sweet, sweet revenge. Check out other snippets here. You can also learn more about the novel, Destiny Seeker, here. Don’t forget to comment below if you’ve got a snippet to share as well! Compliments and constructive insight are equally welcome.
I like the concept of the Beast Forest, very cool worldbuilding. Great snippet!
It’ll be interesting to see how squirrels can help against warriors!
You’d think people wouldn’t hand out curses that could be used against them… but here’s hoping they get lucky!
Oooo the Beast Forest… That’s awesome!! The snippet was great (as usual), but if I’m being honest, I was more interested in the history/backstory info you gave! That’s super creative, especially since shapeshifters are highly popular right now. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks! Sometimes my story elements seem cooler when I summarize/explain them than when they’re finally referenced in the novel. Probably because I don’t want to sound super blunt and obvious in my novel writing…
